Enterprise Mobility – IIoT for Hazardous Areas

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) drives digital success and accelerates the networking of people, plants, assets and systems. For industrial companies it is decisive to know, to what extent devices and plant components can be integrated into the new digital infrastructure and which solutions can make processes permanently more efficient. For ecom, manufacturer of mobile communication and data technology for industrial use up to hazardous areas, the biggest customer benefits lie in four aspects of the Industrial Internet of Things.

1. Decentralizing processes

IIoT is a world equipped with sensors. The resulting data volume makes it necessary to abolish central control systems. Data needs to be processed directly and process-oriented to facilitate a comprehensive monitoring and control of processes. This requires minimal latency times or even better real time operations. Smartphones and tablets can function as decentralized “mini data centers” or digital gateways. For example, in combination with wearables, BLE beacons or other smart sensors. This way, the data collected can be transferred in real time to a smartphone or tablet and be evaluated with the corresponding applications.

2. Digital assistants

With professional applications, peripherals and services, enterprise mobility solutions become digital assistants. ecom´s ultra-rugged Cube-ex video camera, engineered in cooperation with Librestream, for instance, facilitates simultaneous HD-streaming and infrared video. Used in conjunction with Librestream Onsight Connect, experts can support technicians, provide remote diagnosis, identify critical areas on the equipment, and give repair instructions without being on site. This saves valuable time and reduces costs.

3. Secure networking of operating and production resources

Many industrial companies operate in an international environment with various global locations. This has a significant impact on the decision which infrastructure to use, including mobile devices. Interoperability, compatibility and security should be first priorities. ecom´s mobile devices, for example the ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 / Div. 1 certified industrial tablet Tab-Ex® 02, operate worldwide in all mobile networks and meet the legal requirements (technical and explosion protection certification) of the regions where they are used. Consequently, ecom enterprise mobility solutions make data permanently available through the entire process chain – anywhere and anytime. Continuous updates of the Android system, including potential updates to subsequent versions, guarantee the security of the devices.

4. Service platforms and analytics

Conventional commissioning and maintenance concepts frequently don´t use the quantity of digital available information sufficiently. Consequently, they consume a high amount of resources. From spring 2019, ecom will be offering a “Digital Products and Services Platform”, which delivers a sophisticated staging, mobile management and analytics solution for project and IT managers. Security and wireless settings, applications and an enterprise mobile management system as well as further digital services can thus be pre-defined and set up automatically, avoiding error-prone manual processes. Additionally, ecom´s platform offers comprehensive functions such as device diagnostics and device analytics. These functions, for example, give administrators a live view of the network coverage. In addition, they can track critical software events and software installations by the user. The analysis of historical data is also possible. Correlations and causalities can be established via a statistical accumulation of events – for example between geographical data, Wifi coverage and software errors.

Enterprise mobility solutions make IIoT sensor data usable, process-oriented and fast. This helps to increase the availability of devices, machines and plants, to detect errors at an early stage and to shorten maintenance intervals. Mobile devices by ecom form a holistic system made up of central hardware, closely coordinated peripherals and supporting software that is tailored entirely to the customer's requirements and can be configured modularly for future challenges.
