New regulations for offshore hazardous areas

From 2018 new electrical regulations will take effect for the use of intrinsically safe equipment in potentially hazardous locations. These regulations will concern the suppliers and manufacturers of equipment and devices, which are used in offshore and onshore oil and gas locations.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), responsible for maritime safety and security in the U.S. Offshore Continental Shelf, will not permit the use of equipment that is solely approved and certified under ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. A further IECEx-certification or an independent laboratory certification is required.

The changes to these regulations are essential to keep a high level of safety in the face of the newest technological developments. Most ecom products are IECEx-certified to enable their use in many different locations and are fully compliant for the new US offshore regulations.
