The evolution of ecom’s intrinsically safe PDA, the i.roc®

In the late 90’s, ecom started developing their mobile computing division by designed ground-breaking new products to assist workers in potentially explosive environments. In 1999 the world's first intrinsically safe PDA running Windows CE was launched by ecom. After that, many intrinsically safe and explosion-proof devices joined this product category.

In 2002, the Ex-IT700, and the Ex-HPC 46 received approval for use in ATEX Zone 1 areas. This innovation enabled workers to connect with optional Wi-Fi networks and communicate with other input devices and PDAs via Bluetooth.

Another major step was taken in 2004 with the intrinsically safe PDA 610-Ex. Two years later, the 620-Ex followed. The 620-Ex was the result of further development and improvement in terms of both hardware and software: a newer version of Windows OS, more memory and an updated Bluetooth module were installed.

The most recent key milestone was the introduction of the world’s first PDA with WWAN, the i.roc® Ci70 –Ex. It was developed from scratch by ecom, together with Intermec. This device was developed to meet the wishes and needs of a range of customers and help them achieve increased efficiency, accuracy and safety. The result is a robust mobile device, which was introduced in 2013 and is still being made even more powerful, thanks to the modular head solution. Furthermore, the Ci70-Ex has been certified internationally and can be used worldwide.
