Undetected Gas Leak on North Sea Oil Platform

On March 20th a major gas leak occurred on a North Sea oil platform. More than 1670 kg of gas leaked out from a fractured steel pipe over the course of an hour and a half without being detected by the platform's flammable gas detection system.

During this time, areas of the platform were extremely hazardous due to the dense presence of gas. The leak was only discovered by the sense of smell of a worker on the platform over 80mins after the leak occurred.

In an environment this dense with gas, even the smallest spark could have had disastrous consequences. It is due to these risks that it is essential to supply your workers with the most safe and reliable equipment possible.

With Zone 1 ATEX devices such as smartphones, as soon as a gas leak is detected, you can alert every worker on-site and instruct them to get to a safe zone, significantly improving the safety of your workforce. Another key advantage to having your workers equipped with intrinsically safe devices is that even if there is a gas leak, you can be sure that the devices being used on-site are completely safe.
