The "intrinsic safety" type of protection is based on preventing an effective ignition source. Electrical energy is limited to values below the minimum ignition energy of the respective explosive atmosphere.

Intrinsic safety of a circuit is achieved by limiting current, voltage, power, and temperature. Thus, the "intrinsic safety" type of protection is limited to circuits with relatively low power.
