Classification of hazardous areas

Potentially explosive areas or hazardous areas are divided into different zones.

This classification depends on the temporal and local probability of a dangerous explosive atmosphere occurring.

Classification:

  • Zone 0 or 20: An area in which an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
  • Zone 1 or 21: An area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
  • Zone 2 or 22: An area in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
