The term Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the networking of things or objects with the Internet. These objects communicate independently via the Internet and thus perform various tasks for the user.

By networking with the Internet, the devices are considered "intelligent" or "smart" and should support the user in his/her everyday life without being overly conspicuous.

Devices range from smart home applications to wearable devices to industrial machines and sensors. The Internet of Things makes it possible to automate processes, monitor and control devices remotely, and collect data in real time to make informed decisions and improve efficiency.

Applications range from a general supply of information and placing automatic orders to various warning and emergency functions.
